THE SECRETS OF THE NILE
Program by Cheryl de Boissiere
Text by Dave Moorman
Come with us to explore the
ancient enigmas of the Pharoahs.
Cheryl brings together her research
and graphics for our entertainment and
enlightenment.
In the process, she poses some
very interesting questions for the
three great religions that were born
in the Middle East. During this season
when we celebrate the Renewal of one
of those faiths, the Birth of another,
and simultaneously bomb the cussedness
out of fundamentalist of the third, we
probably need to take a few moments to
remind outselves of one, certain
truth:
No one has all the answers. As I
see it, there may (or -- for agnostics
and other questioners -- may not) be
some meta-reality beyond the physical
universe of our five senses. Since the
only mind any of us has was built to
deal with the physical world, and any
language we might speak proceeds from
that mind, we have no adequate words
to discuss this meta-reality.
So what we have are bits and
pieces -- borrowed, stolen, used
without permission -- from 6,000 years
of human experience. These are brought
together in three primary ways -- and
hundreds of variations -- to be the
stuff of faith.
And yet, the "something" that is
at the foundation of faith is not the
particular words.
So why in the world must we fight
over the particular words? Why is this
meta-reality used so abusively. Can
one group be right if it forces all
the others to use the same language?
As you settle down for a long
winter's nap, ponder this --
Being Right has nothing to do with
righteousness. The "final quiz" is not
about correct doctrine, but about how
we each spent our lives. And we all
know the right way to spend our lives
because we have all been on the
receiving end of the way others spend
their lives.
Happy Winterfest!
